On Tuesday, 31 August at 5pm, Alvar Aalto Foundation and the Estonian Embassy in Finland present a lecture by Estonian Academy of Arts professor Mart Kalm on the topic “Modernism in Estonia: from industrialist summer homes to collective farm centers”, and a performance by the ensemble Resonabilis.
Resonabilis' lineup in Helsinki features Kristi Mühling on the kannel, Iris Oja on vocals, Tarmo Johannes on flute and Aare Tammesalu on cello, and as guest soloist, Siân Cameron, a young talent from Wales.
Resonabilis is unique for its focus on the chromatic version of the Estonian folk instrument, the kannel, accompanied by voice, flute, cello and other instruments. The kannel is notable among folk instruments for its exceptional compatibility with classical instruments. The sound of the instrument and the pliant timbral range of the ensemble have drawn praise from a number of composers both in Estonia and abroad.
From Finland, Resonabilis will travel on to Wales where it will participate in the Vale of Glamorgan festival, which is part of the Walestonia 2010 program.
